Opportunity

Abt Associates, a mission-driven, global leader in research and program implementation in the field of international development, seeks qualified candidates for an upcoming USAID-funded Agricultural Systems and Institutional Strengthening project in Uganda. The objective of the program is to put Ugandan institutions on a true path to self-reliance and autonomy by improving their internal abilities to self-assess pain points and take intentional steps to make improvements. The program will work with both the public sector and private APEX organizations, improving business practices, enhancing relationship management, supporting institutional reorganization, etc. 

The Private Sector Capacity Building Specialist will work with the Private for profit (PFP) and Private not for profit (PNFP) APEX organizations within the agricultural market in Uganda to address constraints that limit effective downstream and upstream market system functioning and work towards successful and sustained partnerships and organizational sustainability.
Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise to diagnose private sector bottlenecks, develop organizational improvement action plans and develop methods to improve business and management practices
  • Develop strategic partnerships and work collaboratively with private sector APEX institutions to strengthen their revenue mobilization strategies
  • Provide guidance to establish clear communication channels, advocacy systems, operations and processes for sharing information, suggestions and innovations
  • Support project in planning and implementation of organizational strategy with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to fulfill commitments in the Agriculture Sector Strategic Plan and Framework Implementation Plans
  • Support development of strong foundations for good governance, leadership ethics and development among APEX organization members
  • Support creation and implementation of effective succession plans

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration or other relevant field
  • Six (6) years of relevant professional experience working in private sector, market systems and capacity building
  • Experience in organizational change management within private sector organizations
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, initiative, good judgment, and problem-solving abilities
  • Successful candidates will have a proven record of managing teams to achieve results
  • Successful candidates will have a proven record of effective stakeholder engagement
  • Advanced written/oral skills in English
  • Ugandan national preferre

Minimum Qualifications

  • (6+) years of experience and a master degree OR the equivalent combination of education and experience
