Job Description

Essential Duties:

    • Leads on all matters related to best practices in biodiversity conservation, including ensuring that activities align with USAID’s Biodiversity Policy 
    • Serves as B4R focal point for, and works closely with, B4R partners the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) to identify and develop/expand community conservancies  
    • Liaises with AWF, CTPH, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), National Forest Authority (NFA), and others to collect relevant biodiversity data, studies, and geospatial information
    • Ensures focal species, activities, landscapes, and communities are chosen for the most positive impact on the conservation of Uganda’s wildlife and forest biodiversity 
    • Supports achievement of B4R biodiversity conservation, outcomes, outputs, and indicators as follows: 
    • B4R Outcome 2: Governance arrangements benefit biodiversity and enable communities to benefit from biodiversity  
    • Outputs: 
    • Conservancies developed 
    • Land tenure secured 
    • Private sector engagement facilitated 
    • Community adoption of sustainable practices 
    • Indicators: 
    • Number of hectares of biologically significant areas showing improved biophysical conditions as a result of USG assistance 
    • Environment Performance Index: biodiversity and habitat score 
    • Number of institutions with improved capacity to assess or manage biodiversity and/or associated climate change risks supported by USG assistance 
    • Number of business plans developed/improved/implemented 
    • Populations of key species in B4R critical landscapes are stable or increasing  
    • Ensures that conservation results of technical activities are adequately captured in the Activity Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Plan (AMELP), indicators, and reports
    • Provides technical guidance and contributions for the development of annual workplans, technical activities, reports, and communication materials
    • Participates in the B4R Management Committee, ensuring biodiversity integration with all other project outcomes and results 
    • Shares new and appropriate conservation approaches for inclusion in Activity interventions

Completes any other duties/activities as directed by the COP in line with the Activity’s objectives and the employee’s abilities 

Minimum Required Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree natural resources management, biodiversity, or related field and at least 12 years of professional experience or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 16 years of professional experience
  • Considerable working experience in wildlife conservation areas, in Africa and especially Uganda preferred  
  • Experience working on USAID-funded programs preferred  
  • Demonstrated success in implementing programs aimed at protecting biodiversity in developing countries, including interventions targeted at wildlife and forestry management 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the latest developments in advancing good/best practices in biodiversity that reaches women, youth, the poor, and very poor 
  • Demonstrable experience in writing reports for English language projects and research studies


Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent management, communication, and organizational skills are essential.  
  • Good computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases) are required. 
  • Knowledge of and experience ensuring compliance with USAID regulations and requirements.  
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, as well as the ability to foster professional relationships. 
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, and impartiality. 
  • Able to work independently and effectively in a team environment. 
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a proactive approach. 
  • Ability to multi-task and work to meet tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary team.
